Performers

Dr. Ceylon Mitchell II is the Woodwinds Department Chair at Levine Music. He serves the arts ecosystem as a multi-hyphenate arts leader: contemporary classical flutist, educator, and entrepreneur. Ceylon leads the music collective Raíces Negras, which celebrates Black and Latine voices with contemporary classical, jazz music, and everything in between. He is Music Director of the Flutes on the Brink ensemble and Flute Choir Director at the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra. Ceylon’s achievements include the Strathmore Artist in Residence, a Comcast RISE Program Grant, a Prince George’s County Forty Under 40 Award in the Arts & Humanities, and numerous artist fellowship grants. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland School of Music and serves on the Flute Society of Washington board of directors.

Brazilian-American multi-instrumentalist and composer Lucas Ashby’s musical resume stretches back to his early childhood. Born into a family of internationally touring musicians, Ashby brings a background in rhythms and melodies from musical traditions across the globe. For more than 15 years, Ashby has built a career as a sideman with internationally renowned artists. Since moving to the Washington, DC region in 2014, Lucas frequently performs locally and is an alum of Strathmore’s Artist in Residence program.

André Coelho, a percussionist from Rio de Janeiro, has played in samba schools, street bands, and samba/choro ensembles. Starting with the pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine), a traditional instrument of Brazilian music, André expanded his expertise to include a variety of percussion instruments, becoming a multi-instrumentalist. André also shares his passion for music by offering classes of samba school percussion with EducArte programs at Levine Music.

Seth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind specialists, working with some of the best bands in klezmer, jazz, swing, and more. Wowing audiences on clarinet, flute, and saxophone, Seth has made a name for himself in the Washington/Baltimore region and beyond. He is the featured performer with The Kleztet, Bay Jazz Project, Music Pilgrim Trio, The Natty Beaux, and more. He is a winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies), including “Best World Music Instrumentalist” and “Best Jazz Instrumentalist.” His most recent recording, Clown With A Stick, was released in May 2023.

Guitarist  John Lee’s performances reflect a wide range of influences as evidenced by the broad spectrum of his affiliations, from Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista to Moroccan Gnawa master Hassan Hakmoun and Malian Afropop diva Fatoumata Diawara. John has a BFA from The New School University’s Jazz and Contemporary Music Program in New York City and has released five albums as a leader since graduating. He currently teaches for MusiCorps, a music rehabilitation that helps wounded service members recover their lives through musical study. He also serves as a lecturer on jazz and commercial guitar at Towson University.

Pablo Regis de Oliveira is a cavaquinho (string instrument) player, singer, and percussionist performing Brazilian music in the DC metro area. Pablo is also an accomplished community-based arts administrator, having served as program manager for Strathmore’s Community and Education Department and the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council. Pablo supported and coordinated the Brazilian segment of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage’s annual Folklife Festival and was selected to represent Maryland for the 2023-24 National Leaders of Color Fellowship curated by WESTAF. He also received a 2018 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award. Pablo has trained in various Brazilian movement styles, including the martial art of capoeira as well as frevo and cavalo marinho from the state of Pernambuco.
